Forest microbiology provide general information on the taxonomy, characteristics, and propagation of various microorganisms, such as fungi, bacteria, viruses and viroids, as members of the forest ecosystem. Additionally, in this course, we discuss interrelationships of the microorganisms, especially for pathogenic or parasitic microorganisms, with trees and other members in forest ecosystem.

산림균학(Forest Mycology)은 산림생태계내에 존재하는 균류의 다양성과 역할을 이해하기 위하여 균류의 특성, 즉 균류의 구조, 생장, 영양, 대사, 생리, 생태, 분류 등에 대한 일반적인 내용과 산림생태계의 구성원으로써 수목 및 다른 생물체와의 생태학적 관계 (공생, 기생, 부생 등)에 대한 구체적인 내용을 강의한다 특히 균류는 수목과의 관계에서 균근(Mycorrhizae)를 형성하여 수목의 생장을 돕는 공생균으로, 수목에 기생하여 양분을 취하거나 수목을 죽이는 기생성 병원균(Pathogen)으로, 또는 수목을 분해시켜 유기물을 무기물로 변환시킴으로써 산림내 새로운 생명체에 양분을 제공하는 분해자 (또는 환원자)의 역할을 하는 부생균(Wood Decay Fungi)으로 산림내에서 절대적으로 필요한 존재이다.

For better understandings on fungal biodiversity and roles in forest ecosystem, Forest Mycology give lectures on the characteristics of fungi, such as structure, growth, nutrition, metabolism, physiology, ecology and taxonomy of the fungi, and ecological relationships(symbiosis, parasitism, and saprophytism) of the fungi with other living organisms. The fungi have a symbiotic relationship with tree root as mycorrhizasl fungi, parasitic on trees and take a nutrition as plant pathogensm and saprophytic on living or dead trees and disinegrate organic compounds to inorganic compounds as wood decay fungi, which are absolutely neccesary for keeping ecological balance.

Forest and Shade Tree Pathology give a lecture on the development and environment of tree diseases, disease cycle, penetration and dissemination of the pathogen, factors for disease development, diagnosis and management, and so on. In the second part, lecture extended to the detail contents on the pathogen, disease development and control method for major diseases caused by various pathogens belongs to different taxonomic groups of biotic agents.

Tree Diagnosis and Treatment give lectures on the diagnosis of various damages on trees by biotic and abiotic factors, and surgical theraphy and management of the problems. Detail contents of lectures contains the diagnosis of tree problems, tree maintenance (disease/insect forecasting, sanitation, soil sterilization and improvement, fertilization, and pruning), and theraphy (pesticides, tree injection, wound treatment, and surgery, and so on).
